Instagram Reels size: make it vertical 9:16, usually 1080 x 1920 pixels. Instagram accepts any shape from 1.91:1 to 9:16, at least 720 pixels and 30 frames a second. Reels can run up to 20 minutes, but Instagram does not suggest reels over 3 minutes to new viewers.

What size should an Instagram Reel be?
Make it tall: 9:16, the shape of a phone held upright. At full HD that is 1080 pixels wide and 1920 tall. Instagram also takes wider shapes, down to 1.91:1, but those play with empty space around them.

Where does Instagram cover a Reel?
Meta asks you to keep 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side clear of words and logos, so they are not cropped, covered by the profile picture or the action button, or pushed too close to the edge of tall phone screens. What is the best size for an Instagram Reel?
Vertical 9:16, which fills a phone screen. 1080 x 1920 pixels is the usual full-HD size for that shape. Meta's ad guide recommends 1440 x 2560 pixels for Reels ads, which is the same shape at a higher size.
How long can an Instagram Reel be?
Instagram's help center says you can record and edit reels up to 20 minutes. Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to people who do not follow you yet. Reels ads can run up to 15 minutes.
What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?
Meta asks you to keep 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of words and logos. On a 1080 x 1920 reel that is about 269 pixels at the top, 672 at the bottom and 65 on each side.
Can I post a wide video as a Reel?
Yes. Instagram accepts shapes from 1.91:1 to 9:16. A wide video plays with empty space above and below it, so 9:16 is the better choice. The aspect ratio calculator shows how your size fits 9:16.
Is the Reels size the same as TikTok?
The shape is the same: 9:16 at 1080 x 1920 works on both. The covered areas differ, so check the TikTok safe zone too if you post the same video to both.
